Reaffirming Europe’s Christian roots: ECR MEPs visit Viterbo and Assisi

From Wednesday to Friday next week, ECR Group MEPs will gather in Viterbo and Assisi for a conference and programme of cultural visits devoted to reflecting on the spiritual and civilisational foundations of Europe and their enduring relevance for contemporary conservatism. At a time when Europe is confronted with demographic decline, cultural uncertainty and growing ideological polarisation, the ECR Group will come together to reaffirm the importance of safeguarding the fundamental values that have shaped European thought and identity. Discussions will underline the central role that Europe’s values, roots and traditions play in revitalising its competitiveness and strengthening cohesion. Members will also visit the Papal Basilica and Sacred Convent of Saint Francis, offering a moment of spiritual reflection inspired by the legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi. In Viterbo, Members will receive an address by the Bishop of Viterbo focusing on the city’s historical and spiritual role, its rich ecclesiastical heritage, and its contribution to Europe’s cultural identity. Together, these moments of debate and reflection will reaffirm the ECR Group’s commitment to defending Europe’s cultural heritage as the surest foundation for its future.

Safeguarding Europe: Exposing the growing threat of the Muslim Brotherhood

On Wednesday, ECR MEP Bert-Jan Ruissen will host a conference on the growing threat of the Muslim Brotherhood. The primary aim of this conference is to convene policymakers, experts, and stakeholders in the European Parliament to examine the multifaceted threat posed by the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates to European societies, democratic institutions, and security. The conference will begin with an act of remembrance dedicated to countless individuals who have been killed, displaced, or endured profound suffering at the hands of those espousing the Jihadist ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood. Yezidi genocide survivor and former Hamas captive Fawziya Saydo, kidnapped at just 11 years old, will speak during the commemoration. Israeli blacksmith Yaron Bob, known for his transformative ‘Rockets into Roses’ will present an artwork specially commissioned for the European Parliament.

European Parliament Police Intergroup meeting

On Wednesday, ECR MEP Assita Kanko will chair a meeting of the European Parliament Police Intergroup under the theme: “Before Borders and Battlefields: How the Police Are Central to Europe’s Security.” Weaponised migration, sabotage of critical infrastructure, illegal drones and smuggling balloons forcing airspace closures, cyber-attacks, online trolls and disinformation campaigns — the nature of threats facing Europe is rapidly evolving. The EU may not be directly at war, but it is no longer at peace. Four years after Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, incidents falling under the broad category of hybrid attacks continue to multiply. This year’s annual Police Intergroup event will focus on the central role of police and other law enforcement authorities in protecting Europe’s citizens against these complex and interconnected threats. The discussion will highlight the need for adequate support for police forces, stronger integration between internal and external security strategies, and the full inclusion of law enforcement authorities in international cooperation efforts to counter hybrid threats.
