Livestock must remain at the heart of Europe’s farming

On Monday afternoon in the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, Carlo Fidanza MEP will present his own-initiative report for a sustainable future for the livestock sector in the EU. For the ECR Group, livestock farming is of crucial importance for many European regions, and it supports around four million livelihoods. The processing industry linked to animal production is also a key economic sector in the EU. Mr Fidanza’s report recognises that livestock farming is not inimical to the environment but is part of the solution. Grassland-based systems, for instance, sequester carbon, regulate water, and preserve biodiversity; livestock digestate can fuel our energy transition through biogas, and by-products can feed into a truly circular economy. Our Group’s view is that a one-size-fits-all reduction in livestock numbers risks damaging our food sovereignty, abandoning our land, and destroying rural jobs. We can achieve both productivity and sustainability through innovation, precision farming, improved breeding and support for extensive systems.
