The Industrial Accelerator Act must strengthen competitiveness, not bureaucracy

Following the summer recess, the European Parliament is kicking off with a week of committee meetings. On Wednesday, the Industry, Internal Market and International Trade Committees are holding a joint public hearing on the Industrial Accelerator Act, which aims to support breakthrough technologies and industrial sectors under increasing pressure. The ECR Group supports targeted measures to restore Europe’s industrial competitiveness and reduce strategic dependencies. However, in its current form, the proposal risks creating additional administrative burdens that could further constrain industrial activity. The main challenges undermining the competitiveness of EU industry — high energy costs, limited access to finance and excessive regulatory complexity — remain largely unaddressed by the Commission’s proposal.

Accelerating European defence innovation

The Security and Defence Committee and the Industry, Research and Energy Committee will vote on the provisional agreement on the Programme for Agile and Rapid Defence Innovation (AGILE). The ECR Group supports the agreement as it represents a practical step towards faster defence innovation and stronger access for SMEs, start-ups, and scale-ups. It also shortens the path from technological development to operational use. The agreement is likely to be put to vote during the October I session.

Europe must strengthen prevention and support against wildfires and natural disasters

On Tuesday, the Committee on Regional Development will hold an exchange of views on the natural disasters, heatwaves and summer wildfires affecting several Member States which are becoming an increasingly serious challenge for European regions.The ECR Group believes that the EU response must focus on prevention, preparedness and concrete support, while respecting the primary role of Member States and local authorities. Europe should help regions act more quickly by ensuring more flexible funding, cutting unnecessary bureaucracy and strengthening effective instruments, including the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and the EU Solidarity Fund.
