Overly complex regulation on batteries and waste batteries should be stopped
On Thursday, the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety will vote on an update of the regulations on batteries and battery recycling. For the ECR Group, the proposed text is overly complex and the compromise amendments tabled are, in some cases, difficult or impossible to implement technically. Creating an overly complicated set of delegated and implementing acts could make the regulatory environment unpredictable and might discourage investors. In the ECR’s view, the proposal as it stands will increase the price of batteries of all sizes and performance ranges. ECR Shadow Rapporteur Alexandr Vondra says: “At a time when battery technologies are becoming increasingly widespread in the mobility sector, this is clearly the wrong signal to send to manufacturers and end consumers. A situation in which only people with high incomes can afford an electric vehicle should be prevented. We have to face reality and try to make regulations that do not place significant hurdles between citizens and affordable mobility.”
