ECR Group will not take part in the closing event of the Conference on the Future of Europe

On Monday, Europe Day, the closing event of the Conference on the Future of Europe will take place in the European Parliament building in Strasbourg - without the European Conservatives and Reformists Group. The ECR Group left the Conference at the last plenary meeting in an act of protest against its shortcomings in terms of inclusiveness, legitimacy and transparency. The Conference did not serve as a platform to share different ideas for the future, but as a cherry-picking exercise manipulated by some political families.

Security in the Eastern Partnership area

On Thursday morning, the Foreign Affairs Committee will vote ECR Rapporteur Witold Waszczykowski’s initiative report “Security in the Eastern Partnership area and the role of Common Security and Defence Policy” that aims to increase the effectiveness of EU’s security and defense policy towards the Eastern Partnership countries. In the text, MEPs call condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s unprovoked and unjustifiable war of aggression on Ukraine, support closer defence and security coordination and cooperation with the Eastern Partnership countries and encourages Member States to enhance their defence spending while further strengthening the military resilience of Ukraine.

The report considers Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine as a wake up call for European defence. In order to ensure that future Common Security and Defence Policy missions are planned effectively with more means, an increased level of ambition and reviewed mandates to confront the challenges faced in the hopes of achieving mission objectives with an emphasis on coping with emerging and disruptive technologies.

The plenary vote will take place at the June Session.
