Event: Quo Vadis, Albania? Between Democracy and Authoritarianism

On Tuesday 8 April, at 14:00, ECR MEP Arkadiusz Mularczyk and Former Vice-President of the European Parliament Ryszard Czarnecki, along with Mr. Juxhin Gjoni from the Eugenius Foundation are hosting a discussion on Albania’s democratic trajectory.

On 11 May 2025, Albania will hold its third national elections since the Socialist Party came to power in 2013. This is a crucial moment for Albania’s future and its path towards European integration.

In recent years, there have been growing challenges in Albania’s democratic process. Concerns have been raised regarding electoral transparency, the functioning of state institutions, and the influence of organised groups on the political landscape. The 14 May 2023 local elections sparked controversy and raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process. The Democratic Party of Albania has documented cases of irregularities, highlighting the need for further efforts to ensure fully free and fair elections.

Albania stands at a crossroads: will it strengthen its path toward a democratic and European future, or will obstacles arise that may distance it from this course? Collaborative efforts among democratic forces, civil society, and international partners can help enhance electoral transparency, strengthen institutions, and support Albania’s European aspirations.

During this event, guests will analyse past challenges and discuss ways to further support Albania’s democratic path and its progress towards European integration.

When: Tuesday, 8 April @ 14:00 - 15:30

Where: SPINELLI 1H1, European Parliament
