Wednesday 21 January @ 16:30-18:00 CET
On Wednesday evening, the ECR Migration Policy Group, hosted by MEP Charlie Weimers, Co-Chair of the Group, and MEP Sebastian Tynkkynen, Head of the Finnish delegation in the ECR Group, will hold a briefing and Q&A with Dr. Simo Grönroos and researcher Samuli Salminen from the Finnish think tank Suomen Perusta.
Europe’s borders are open, but public finances are not unlimited. One of the most persistent yet under-examined questions in the migration debate is the fiscal cost of mass migration. To date, comprehensive cost–benefit analyses have been conducted in only a handful of EU Member States, leaving policymakers to debate migration policy without clear data on its long-term economic consequences.
Dr. Grönroos and Mr. Salminen will present their research on the fiscal impacts of migration, offering evidence-based insights into costs, contributions, and long-term trends. The briefing will also explore political drivers behind open migration policies, political preferences among migrant populations, and public opinion on migration, drawing on survey data and empirical research. This is a timely and data-driven discussion on one of the most consequential policy challenges facing Europe today.
