Proposals that would allow cross-border workers in the EU to choose where they claim social security benefits have been opposed by ECR MEPs today.
They believe that the report from the European Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs Committee on revising EU social security rules will create loopholes that could leave the system open to abuse and potential fraud. The plans will now be discussed by negotiators from the Parliament, Council and Commission, and the ECR hopes revisions will be made.
Flemish ECR MEP Helga Stevens commented: “What the European Parliament actually approved today is a range of incentives for social security tourism. It is incomprehensible how Europe does not want to listen to the concerns of its citizens. “
