Europe’s Strategy for beating cancer: the long-term effects for our health

Tomorrow, 27 November, a webinar organised and hosted by the ECR Group’s Andrey Slabakov will bring together Members of the European Parliament, representatives from the European Commission and Bulgarian Ministry of Health, international oncology experts and the pharmaceutical industry for a virtual roundtable discussion on the EU’s approach to fighting cancer. In light of an upcoming vote of the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Beating Cancer, Mr Slabakov has invited stakeholders to the table to discuss the expected impacts of the Beating Cancer Plan, not only at a policy level, but for real patients, for those at risk, and for cancer survivors. The event aims to highlight both the strong and weak points underlying the European strategy on cancer and any potential for its improvement.

Main speakers are Andrey Slabakov, ECR MEP, Member of the Special Committee on Beating Cancer; Joanna Kopcinska, ECR MEP, Vice-Chair of the Special Committee on Beating Cancer; Prof. Dobrin Konstantinov, MD, PhD – Head, Pediatric Clinical Hematology and Oncology Department, “Tsaritsa Johanna” Hospital, Sofia; Assoc. A reinforced role for the European Medicines Agency in crisis preparedness and management of medicines and medical devices

On Tuesday, Members of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety will vote on an inter-institutional agreement to reinforce the role for the European Medicines Agency (EMA). The ECR Group welcomes that the text fully addresses concerns over subsidiarity. ECR Shadow Rapporteur Joanna Kopcińska considers the deal an important upgrade to the EU’s health architecture. It will ensure that the EU has the medicines needed to cope with public health emergencies. Under the agreement, the EMA will establish a special platform to help monitor the supply and demand of medicinal products and create a public website featuring information about which key medicines are vulnerable to shortages. In addition, two EU-funded steering groups will deal with such shortages, with summaries of their procedures and recommendations still to be disclosed. Data protection provisions will also be strengthened, safeguarding transfers of personal data in the context of the new EMA mandate.

Vote: Tuesday 30 November @ 9:00
