Founded in 1988, the Swedish Democrats party is now the fastest growing popular movement in Sweden with over 30,000 members across the country. It is a socially conservative party whose with Swedish national interests at heart. They seek a democratic, equal and environmentally-friendly society in which all citizens are protected by, and equal before, the law – a society in which all citizens are also guaranteed a high level of economic and social security. The Swedish Democrats are sceptical of supranational forms of cooperation that would involve establishing a political union with a constitution taking precedence over those of the Member States, preferring instead to have intergovernmental cooperation between sovereign nation states.
